CENTRE FOR APPLIED MATHEMATICS

MINES ParisTech

Founded in 1976, the Centre for Applied Mathematics (CMA) applies its skills in modeling, system theory, operation research, the mathematics of control and decision science to develop an original expertise dedicated to the mutation facing world of energy to further its research project on Modeling for Energy, Environment and Economy.

This activity has led to research projects, industrial contracts, the creation of teaching programmes (the Post Graduate Master specialized in Energy Engineering and Management OSE), colaboration with other research teams (CREDEN (University of Montpellier I), INRIA, CIRED (AgroParisTech/Ecole des Ponts)) and partnerships with major participants in the field of energy.

The CMA in particular han an expertise in prospective related to energy planning: initiated in 2003 and supported by the French Council on Energy, our approach rests on optimising a technico-economic representation of the energy system through the MARKAL-Times (Market Allocation). MARKAL is a methodological corpus developed within ETSAP (Energy Technology Systems Analysis Programme), an international consortium sanctioned by the International Energy Agency (of which the CMA is the designated reference lab for France).

As for all the thirteen research centres of MINES ParisTech, the research activities of the CMA are geared toward industry and enable the development of courses answering to the twin exigency of MINES ParisTech: forming engineers well aware of the preoccupations of the industrial world, while remaining on top of the latest developments in scientific research. Benefiting from a rich environment made of research institutions active on the same topics and of Hi-tech companies thanks its location in the Sophia Antipolis technopolis, the CMA is strong of a score of researchers and four outside collaborators.
